I think there is plenty to dislike with Windows 11 but the start menu, in my personal opinion, isn't one of those things. Honestly, I think they did a great job with the start menu in 11.

The dorky metro live tiles are gone, you have a functional and useful "shortcut" area where you can click to easily see all of your apps as well. It's simple, clean, and does exactly what you need it to do.

In fact, I think it's better than Windows 10 and in some ways. I don't find the Win11 start menu to be horrid at all.

Uptake of Windows 11 is low (partially due to compatibility issues) but now you can group apps on the desktop we'll overlook those issues and deploy!?!ġ) It emphasises just how horrid the Win11 start menu and taskbar are if people are primarily opening apps using desktop shortcuts.Ģ) Microsoft would have been much better off implementing this as a feature of the start menu so that it becomes more of an "app drawer"ģ) FGS Microsoft let Win11 Pro & Enterprise set it so that the recommended section of the Start Menu is completely hidden/not present Like Win7, right? Wasn't that a feature back then? I forgot how much I missed that one. I don't even want to know what will happen if I try to combine a local desktop icon with a synced desktop icon. And since Windows has 2 desktop folders, both of which appear on my screen and one of which syncs across my devices, confusion and clutter are all Desktop brings me. Once I was clued into "hit Start and type what you want", I don't even look at my desktop anymore, except for temp storage. That is, if I could part with $10 to wrangle icons I don't even look at anymore. And now that you fine people have introduced me to Stardock Fences, I have a new aesthetically pleasing app arrangement to look forward to. And, I don't think I'll look forward pushing apps around the screen in the hopes that they might hook up and get a room of their own. Once I graduated to charcoal, I never looked back. And I pride myself on discovering new ways to use things. But I definitely do see the use-case for it. I'm not suggesting this minor change is earth-shattering or amazing. I know I can create folders currently and drag/drop them into the quick launch portion of the Start Menu but it's not as aesthetically pleasing or intuitive as something that would be more built-in and integrated. and then on top of that have the ability to toggle back to my all apps view. I'd be nice if I could group them a bit so I had a section for my work apps, game apps, weather apps, etc. One gripe I've always had with the Start Menu in 10/11 is when you're in the All Apps listing, it's literally just that - all apps. I actually like the idea and hope they integrate it into the Start Menu.

They aren't getting rid of the traditional folder, they're just adding a new more aesthetically pleasing apps-only folder system that you can also use (or not use). I look at it more as a different type of folder entirely. Is a gas grill less useful because you can't use charcoal or pellets with it? I guess it really just depends on how you look at it. Right now I can create a folder, name it "Apps" and drag all my desktop shortcuts into it but I can also drag everything else into it, including documents, other folders, pictures, etc. It's nothing earth-shattering but it's also not a terrible change or addition. the default 'icon' is now previewing the contents of the folder too, much like it does on your phone. So the real difference is that instead of right-clicking and creating a folder, you can essentially drag and drop icons to create folders? While this functionality is indeed different to how you create a folder on the desktop, what is it saying of modern day users who are 'unable' to manage their computer desktops because they can't create a folder or delete an icon?
